SUBMISSIONS
Abrasu Magazine accepts submissions all year round and publishes quarterly issues! We're looking for art and literature that conveys personal experiences or encounters with Southeast Asian or Oceanian culture. You do not need to be from these regions or stick to our theme, but we are prioritizing media regarding these specific cultures. We value passionate and young voices, so if you are 20 years old or younger, consider submitting for our magazine! While we look specifically for cultural pieces, we are open to other genres, so you can always submit a piece you've already created. This means that we accept simultaneous submissions and previously published work, but please inform us if your work has been published elsewhere when submitting.

Since Abrasu Magazine is backed by a very small group of students, we can take up to two months to respond to your submission. If two months have passed and we have yet to respond, please reach out to us at abrasumagazine@gmail.com and we will reply shortly.

READING & PUBLISHING PERIODS

Abrasu Magazine publishes issues quarterly. Any submissions turned in after the deadlines below will be considered for the following issue. For instance, if you submit a poem on December 31, it will be considered for the spring issue, not the winter issue.

GUIDELINES
-
Abrasu Magazine only accepts works from individuals up to 20 years of age. You can still submit if you are under or are 20 at the time of submission.
-
If your work does not fit into our theme of culture but is accepted, we will place it towards the end of an issue or in a separate one as cultural works are our priority. Please note that we are more likely to accept works that discuss ethnic issues and/or experiences.
-
If your work has been accepted, wait four months before submitting again. If your work has been rejected, wait one month before submitting again.
-
We only accept submissions through our Google Form. (Please refer to the button at the bottom of this page.)
-
We will allow your work to be published under an alias, but use your real name when submitting to us.
-
We will not consider or publish work that violates any of the guidelines mentioned in this section or in the next.
-
Interested contributors are limited to only one submission in each category when submitting. For example, you can only turn in one submission (which entails a limit of up to three poems) for the poetry category, but you can also submit one for the art category.
-
Unfortunately, Abrasu Magazine is unable to pay its contributors at the moment.
-
Abrasu Magazine retains First North American Serial Rights to published work. Those rights revert to you upon publication.
ART
We are open to any art medium and form (except NFTs, NFT-like works, and comics), but we require that you specify what materials you used in completing your artwork. We allow up to five distinct artworks to be included in one submission and will consider publishing all. Your work should be in PDF, JPEG, TIFF, SVG, or PNG format. It should be high resolution with a minimum of 300 dpi. The title of each file attached in a submission should be the title of the artwork as well. Please attach a brief artist statement of up to 250 words.
POETRY
We accept up to four poems in one submission and are open to any form of poetry (i.e., visual poetry, slam poetry, etc). The entire submission should be 1000 words at maximum and should not exceed 20 pages in total. Use size 12 text and the Times New Roman/EB Garamond font in your submission, and make sure to double space it. Your work should be in PDF or DOCX format, and all poetry entries should be in one file. We recommend that you use Google Docs when working on or gathering your pieces. Please title your file: Poetry_Lastname.

If you are attaching a video for your slam or spoken poetry submission, also attach the poem you are reading and follow the guidelines above. We will not accept videos longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
FICTION & NONFICTION
We accept all types of nonfiction and fiction works, stories, essays, etc but will not accept erotica or fanfiction. We are open to genre-breaking, avante garde pieces, so if you have a work that you don't believe can be defined by any particular genre, consider submitting to Abrasu Magazine! However, we require that your works are typed, have numbered pages, do not exceed 1500 words, are double-spaced, and use size 12 and the Times New Roman/EB Garamond font. If you are submitting an academic essay, please site your sources using either MLA or APA format. We only accept up to three pieces in one submission for this category. Please title your file: Literature_Lastname.
WHERE WOULD THIS BELONG?
If you have a work (say a video or audio) and don't know what category it belongs to but want your message heard nonetheless, feel free to send your work over to us. We'll either categorize it as we see best or reserve a special section for it in our issues. Don't be afraid to be ambiguous in your art, and express your self and culture as you would when submitting to our magazine.
